Home winemaking 101 - tips tricks and steps to making wine at home

Creating your own wine at home is much easier and simpler than most realize.

List of supplies needed to make your own home brewed wine:

-A fairly large container, jug, or pot to store the fruit juice in
-An electric juicer (extracts the juice from the fruits you will use to make the wine).
-Sugar - super market
-Boiling water or sterilizing solutions or tablets
-Glass containers used to ferment and store the fruit juice. You can get the proper vessel at a brewing shop or online at a  winemaking supply website.
-A plastic tube for siphoning purposes.
-Yeast which is available at your local super market

There are 2 main methods for home wine making. The easier way is from a kit with step by step instructions and is usually made with something along the lines of concentrated grape juice. The other way is to do it from scratch. This way is much more rewarding. And although making wine from home from scratch takes longer and is more difficult the results are much better as you have total control of the the final product. If you want to create wine inexpensively and rapidly and are not worried about the wines quality then a wine making kit will suffice.

You can make wine at home using almost any type of fruit, not just grapes. The following is a list of supplies you will need to create wine at home.

• Step number 1:
  Press or juice fruit to extract its juices. You will want enough juice to fill the glass jugs you are using. A lot of times a wine making instructions will recommend watering down your juice to get the volume you need. If you want the absolute best results do not do this as this will cut down on the flavor of the end product.

  Do not be afraid to get creative. It is fine to mix the juice from different types of fruits together to create your own special and personal wine. In the beginning if you are a beginner to home wine brewing you may not want to experiment. You can follow a step-by-step recipe. • Step two to making your own wine from home - add the sugar
  Very sweet juices will not need the addition of sugar to the recipe. The purpose of sugar is that of fermentation or the production of alcohol.  Fruits that are already sweetened like sweet grapes will not need the inclusion of sugar. If you decide to add sugar generally speaking add one to two pounds sugar for each 1 gallon of fruit juice or lesser amount if you want a drier wine.

  One thing you can do if you like to experiment is make several different batches of the same wine changing the volume of sugar that you use in each batch so if you have a 5 vessels that will hold and store the wine for example use different amounts of sugar for each vessel paying attention too how the different wine batches turn out.  You can also use the same experimentation process to experiment with different fruits and fruit combinations. With time and experience you will be able to produce your own personal wine that no one else has. Keep in mind the more sugar you use the more alcohol rich will be of the wine when you are complete. Add the sugar to the fruit juice by warming the fruit juice in a pot stirring in the sugar. Warming the fruit juice first will ensure the sugar gets  dissolved completely.
  

• Add the yeast (Step #3)
  Make sure your glass containers are sterilized with the sterilizing solution or tablets or boiling water. Put the sugared fruit juice into the glass vessel. Add the powdered yeast and a little warm water and sugar into a cup to dissolve it.  Let is set for 5 minutes. This will initiate the yeast activation. Add the yeast to the fruit juice mixture. Put your airtight lid on top. The yeast will convert the sugar into alcohol as your wine ferments.
• Step #4 - WAIT
  Put your fermentation vessels (the glass jugs with the sugar wine yeast mixture) in a location that is 70-85 degrees. Let your homemade wine ferment for up to a year. For best results up to a year. For best results patience is necessary here. For many people this waiting part is the hardest part as they are eager to drink their own homemade wine.

  As your wine mixture starts to ferment you may see the layer of dead yeast cells on the bottom of the glass jug.  Leaving this dead yeast in the wine mixture will will taint the quality of your home made wine. The way to respond to this is about once a month or so siphon the wine out into a new glass vessel making sure not to siphon the dead yeast from the base of the glass jug.

  Check on your wine every 15 or so days in the beginning. Depending upon how much this dead yeast is accumulating you may want to siphon the wine a more or less often.

• Step #4 - Bottling your wine
  Place the wine in a cold place for 10 days making sure not to let it freeze. Generally speaking a temperature of between 40 to 50�F. is good.  This will improve the wines clarity making it taste better. Bottle the wine and cork it. Look online for wine bottle labels

If you are serious about winemaking as you are making wine you want to keep accurate records of the methods and ingredients you use to make each batch of wine. So if you make a make a great wine batch you will have the exact recipe for that and you can produce it over and over for years to come.

As a final step for total perfection you should let your wine sit on a rack for a couple of years. There you have it.  You can now go out and make your own perfect batch of wine at home.
